The first word of a bullet point sets its tone. "Responsible for", "Worked on" and "Helped with" describe being present. Strong action verbs describe doing something, and they make the reader expect a result.
Why the first word matters
Recruiters skim the left edge of your bullets. If every line starts with "Responsible for", they all blur together. If they start with Launched, Reduced, Negotiated and Trained, the reader gets a picture of your work before reading a single number.
A good bullet follows a simple pattern:
Action verb + what you did + the result (with a number if possible)
❌ Responsible for handling customer complaints.
✅ Resolved 40+ customer complaints a day over chat and email, keeping CSAT above 90% for 6 months.
How to use this list
- Pick the most specific verb that's true. "Built" is better than "Worked on". "Negotiated" is better than "Handled".
- Don't repeat a verb within one job. Vary them across your bullets.
- Use the past tense for past roles, and the present tense for your current role.
- Don't inflate. Saying you "Led" something you supported will come out in the interview. "Contributed to" is honest and fine when you were one of many.

Practise on one bullet
Take your weakest bullet and run it through three questions:
- What did I actually do? Pick the verb.
- For whom, or at what scale? Users, customers, budget, team size, volume.
- What changed? A number, a time saved, a decision it informed, or a result someone noticed.
Before: Worked on the company website.
After: Redesigned the product pages of the company website in Figma and Webflow, increasing average time on page from 40s to 1m 50s.
Do this for every bullet and your resume will read as a list of things you achieved, not a list of things you were assigned.
