How to write a fresher resume with no work experience
No job yet? Your projects, internships, college work and skills are your experience. A section-by-section guide to a one-page fresher resume that gets shortlisted.

Every fresher hits the same wall: jobs want experience, and you need a job to get experience. The way through is to see that experience doesn't have to mean a salary. Projects, internships, college events, freelance gigs, competitions and volunteering all count, as long as you describe them the way you'd describe a job: what you did, and what changed because of it.
This guide walks through a fresher resume one section at a time.
The layout: one page, education near the top
For a fresher, the order that works best is:
- Header (name and contact details)
- Summary or objective (2–3 lines)
- Education
- Projects
- Internships and experience (if any)
- Skills
- Certifications, achievements and activities
Keep it to one page. A recruiter hiring freshers looks at a lot of resumes, and a tight page reads as confidence, not a lack of material. Use a single-column layout with standard headings, so applicant tracking software can read it.
1. Header
- Your full name, in the largest text on the page
- Phone number and a professional email (
firstname.lastname@…, notcooldude99@…) - City, and "Open to relocation" if that's true
- LinkedIn URL, plus GitHub, Behance or a portfolio link if you have one
Skip your photo, date of birth, father's name and full postal address unless the employer specifically asks. (More on this in resume vs CV vs biodata.)
2. Summary
Two or three lines that say what you've studied, what you can do and what you're looking for:
B.Tech (ECE, 2026) graduate who builds IoT prototypes with Arduino and Python. Built a smart-irrigation system that cut water use by 30% in a college pilot. Looking for an embedded-systems trainee role.

3. Education
List your most recent degree first:
- Degree, branch and college, with the city
- Years (2022–2026), or "Expected 2026"
- CGPA or percentage, if it's a strength
- Relevant coursework, only if it matches the job (for example: Data Structures, DBMS, Computer Networks)
Include Class 12 and Class 10 with their percentages. Many Indian employers, especially in campus hiring and IT services, still screen on them. Once you have a couple of years of work experience, you can drop them.
4. Projects: your main experience section
For most freshers, this is the most important section. Pick 2–4 projects that are closest to the job, and give each one:
- A name, and the tools you used
- A link (GitHub, live demo or a short video), if possible
- 2–3 bullet points in the action + what + result format
Compare:
❌ Made an e-commerce website using MERN stack as final year project.
✅ ShopLite: e-commerce web app (React, Node.js, MongoDB) · [github.com/…]
- Built cart, checkout and order tracking for 200+ products, with JWT login and Razorpay test payments
- Cut page load time from 4.1s to 1.6s by lazy-loading images and caching API responses
- Deployed on Render; used by 40 classmates in a two-week demo, and fixed 12 bugs they reported
The second version shows skills, decisions and proof, which is exactly what a recruiter needs to picture you in the job.
No technical projects? Non-tech roles have projects too:
- A marketing student's college-fest social media campaign (followers gained, registrations)
- A commerce student's case study or financial analysis of a listed company
- An HR student's survey of 100 students on job expectations, and the summary report
5. Internships and other experience
Treat internships exactly like jobs: role, organisation, dates and 2–4 bullet points with results.
Also count:
- Part-time and freelance work: tutoring, content writing, design gigs, delivery work. These show reliability and real-world skills.
- College roles: placement-cell coordinator, club lead, event organiser. Write about scale: "Managed a ₹1.5 lakh budget and 25 volunteers for a 2-day fest with 3,000 visitors."
- Volunteering: NSS, NGO work, teaching drives.
Even a short internship counts. One month, described well, beats a vague six months.
6. Skills
Group your skills so they're easy to scan, and only list what you can discuss in an interview:
- Technical: Python, SQL, React, Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP), Tally
- Tools: Git, Figma, Power BI, Canva, Google Analytics
- Languages: English, Hindi, Marathi
Leave out star ratings and percentage bars. Software can't read them, and "Python ★★★★☆" means nothing to a recruiter. Avoid vague soft skills like "hard-working" or "team player", and show them in your bullets instead.
7. Certifications and achievements
Include certifications that are relevant and recognised, like NPTEL, AWS Cloud Practitioner or Google's career certificates, plus competitions, hackathons, scholarships and ranks. One line each:
- Top 10 of 300 teams, Smart India Hackathon 2025 (internal round)
- NPTEL Elite certificate: Programming in Java (2025)
Common fresher mistakes
- A generic objective: "Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation…" says nothing. Be specific.
- Two pages of filler: hobbies, a declaration, a signature and a page of personal details. Cut them.
- Listing every course and workshop. Keep the 3–5 most relevant.
- Copying a friend's resume. Recruiters at campus drives see the same template and wording over and over. Make yours specific.
- Typos and an inconsistent format. Use one font, one date style, and full stops either everywhere or nowhere.
- The wrong file: send a PDF named
Harish-Kashaboina-Resume.pdf, notresume final new (2).docx.
Your fresher resume checklist
- It fits on one page, in a single column with standard headings
- The summary names your degree, your strongest skills and the role you want
- At least two projects with links and result-focused bullets
- Every bullet starts with a verb (see our list of action verbs)
- Skills match the job post, honestly
- You've proofread it twice, and someone else has read it too
- It's saved as a PDF with a clear file name
You're not competing on years of experience. You're competing on how clearly you show what you can already do.
